Traditional filters use physical methods to absorb bacteria, while the new filter contains cotton fibers wrapped in a "nano jacket" that creates an electric field that kills the bacteria that flow through it, and the cotton fibers are multi-layered and thick. Up to 6.4 cm, enough to kill most of the bacteria in the water.
Cui Yi, an associate professor of materials science and engineering at Stanford University, said the cost of the new filter is also low. The new filter consumes only one-fifth the power of the conventional filter.

The filter pores of the traditional filter are very small, and it is easy to block the micropores when the bacteria are adsorbed and separated from the water. The new filter has a relatively large pore size and only kills the bacteria but does not adsorb the bacteria, so the speed of the water flow is not slowed down. The water speed is 80,000 times that of conventional filters. This filter is practical in remote areas where chlorine cannot be used to sterilize water, which can greatly reduce the spread of diseases such as cholera, typhoid and hepatitis that spread through water.
The researchers plan to develop filters for filtering different types of bacteria and test multiple combined filters.
