According to a press release issued by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory on the 26th, compared with other fuel cells, this "direct methanol fuel cell" does not require any fuel and does not emit any pollutants when generating electricity. Its power generation by-products are water and carbon dioxide. The resulting electrical energy is relatively cleaner. In addition, "direct methanol fuel cells" also have features such as simple design and high energy density.
According to the communiqué, some of the fuel cells currently used mainly use hydrogen as the energy source, but hydrogen is difficult to store and transport, and the “direct methanol fuel cell†overcomes this shortcoming.
This research and development has been funded by the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency. Gerard Halbert, former head of the Electron-Chemistry team at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, who participated in the research and development of this technology, said that this type of fuel cell is expected to be used in the defense, military, and commercial sectors in the future and its market prospects are promising.
