The new polymer film meets the heat of heat absorption on demand

MIT's official website recently released news that researchers at the university have developed a solid material for chemical energy storage—a transparent polymer film that stores solar energy during the day and emits heat when needed. It can be used in windows. Many different surfaces such as glass or clothes.

One of the researchers, Professor Jeffrey Grossman, explained that the key to long-term stable storage of solar energy is to store it in the form of chemical changes rather than heat. At present, the energy storage material based on the chemical reaction, named Solar Thermal Fuel (STF), has been developed, but it can only be used in liquids and cannot be made into a durable solid film. The newly developed polymer film is the first polymer based on a solid state material, which is not only cheap in raw materials but also simple in manufacturing process.

Researcher Eugene Zhou pointed out that the production of this new material requires only two steps and is very simple. They experimented with azobenzene and reacted to light by changing the molecular composition, and then returned to the original state with a small heat pulse stimulus, releasing more heat during the process. In the experiment, the researchers modified their chemical properties to improve the energy density, formed a smooth surface and the ability to react to heat pulses, and finally got this extremely transparent new material.

Research shows that the new transparent film can be integrated into the front windshield of the car, absorb the sunlight and store it, and then, as soon as the heat is “activated”, it can release heat and melt the ice on the glass. The system can improve the performance of electric vehicles. In cold weather, electric cars consume too much energy to heat and melt ice, and new polymers are expected to drastically reduce such consumption.

Grossman said that at present, this new material is yellowish, which affects transparency and they are improving. In addition, the heat released can only be 10 degrees Celsius higher than the surrounding environment, and they hope to increase to 20 degrees Celsius.
