The Ministry of Environmental Protection recommends that during periods of heavy pollution, children, the elderly, and people with heart and lung diseases should stay indoors as much as possible, stop outdoor sports, and the general population should reduce outdoor exercise.

Fu Haidong, a professor at the School of Public Health at Fudan University, reminded the public of the “four strokes” available for personal protection under hazy weather.

The first move: "home." It is suggested that residents should try to stay indoors when haze is high or the concentration of atmospheric PM2.5 is high, reduce the time or intensity of outdoor activities, and keep the doors and windows closed to reduce the indoor PM2.5 concentration.

The second measure: "net." The conditional residents can use an air purifier. A randomized, double-blind cross-over design study conducted at Fudan University shows that even short-term purifier use can improve residents’ cardiopulmonary health.

The third measure: "cover." Can be properly worn with particulate protection masks. A previous study conducted by Beijing on cardiovascular patients showed that wearing a mask scientifically and reasonably can reduce the individual's exposure to particulate matter and improve the symptoms of the cardiovascular system. However, ordinary masks have limited protection against PM2.5.

The fourth measure: "make up." The possible mechanisms of PM2.5 affecting health include oxidative stress and inflammatory effects. Therefore, studies abroad have concluded that the supplement of antioxidants with antioxidant effects can alleviate the health hazards of residents of atmospheric pollution, but these studies are low concentration pollution conditions in foreign countries. Whether or not it can achieve proper protection in China will require more evidence to support medical evidence.
