U.S. Research Converts Chicken Fat to Biodiesel
Researchers at Arkansas State University in the United States announced that supercritical methanol can convert chicken fat into biodiesel fuel. This discovery will make alternative fuels more abundant and accessible, and will significantly reduce the cost of raw materials and other agricultural and sideline products.
When a substance is heated and pressurized to a critical point, it enters a "supercritical" state, and extreme temperatures and pressures cause matter to exist in a balanced state between gas and liquid. Using this theory, the researchers used a supercritical methanol method to chemically react low-grade chicken fat and Tal oil fatty acids. At high temperatures and pressures, supercritical methanol melts chicken fat and tar oil fatty acids, and reacts in the components of both, thereby obtaining chicken fat bio-oil.
The preparation of biodiesel from animal and vegetable fats and oils has always been a project that countries are striving to develop. Biodiesel can be used as both a biofuel and an additive for diesel fuel. At present, biodiesel is mainly produced from vegetable oils in Europe and North America, and biodiesel is produced in Japan by recycling waste edible oils.
The researchers said that the new research results will lead energy producers to rethink the value of oil and biodiesel, and major oil companies have begun to focus their research on using biodiesel as a substitute for petroleum fuels. Producing crude oil and raw materials from chicken fat is obviously much cheaper and much more environmentally friendly.
