The world’s first full-electricity propulsion satellite is now fully operational
According to foreign media reports, Boeing recently announced that the company’s first full-electric propeller developed is now fully operational. The ABS-3A 702SP satellite launched over March last year was returned to its owner ABS Communications on the 31st of last month. The satellite will provide communications services for the United States, Europe, the Middle East and African countries. On March 1 last year, the ABS-3A satellite launched the Falcon 9 rocket from Cape Canaveral Air Force Base to the target orbit. It is reported that the key technology used by this geosynchronous satellite is the Xenon Ion Propulsion System (XIPS).
In the past, the company used a hybrid system of chemicals and ion thrusters to send the satellites to a predetermined orbit, but the arrival of new technologies meant that satellites would deploy full-powered drives for the first time.
Boeing said that the technology is 10 times more efficient than liquid fuel rockets. Four 25-cm propellers use helium as a propellant, which allows the 702SP satellite to remain in a predetermined position based on only 4 kg of fuel per year. In other words, less fuel is required for the satellites and the size of the propeller is smaller, which will greatly reduce the cost.
Next year, Boeing will launch a second 702SP satellite for ABS.
