Japan Develops New Lithium Battery: Up to 70 Years of Life

Lithium batteries used today have a maximum lifetime of about 10 years. Earlier, Japan's Sharp and Professor Tian Zhonggong of Kyoto University have successfully developed lithium-ion batteries with a service life of up to 70 years. The long-lived lithium-ion battery produced in this trial had a volume of 8 cubic centimeters. By utilizing the latest computer-based simulation technology, the material combinations used for positive electrodes such as iron and silicon were optimized.
Judging from the results of this experiment, this long-lived lithium-ion battery can be charged and discharged 25,000 times. If you charge and discharge once per day, the service life can be as long as 70 years. And Sharp said that after the actual charge and discharge of 10,000 times, its performance is still stable. Calculated in this way, the life span of one such lithium-ion battery will be six times that of the original. Even if it is used in combination with a power generation device that uses renewable energy, the battery can continue to be used even if the solar panel and the wind generator are updated.
R&D personnel plan to use this long-lived lithium-ion battery for wind power and solar power generation as a large battery. At this stage, wind and solar power are affected by the climate, and power output will change at any time. If it cooperates with the battery, it can ensure stable output and reduce the impact on the transmission network. Frequent replacement of batteries is an important factor in driving up the cost of power generation.
