Fiat Powertrain Technology Corporation (FPT) announced on June 12, 2007 in Shanghai, China, that its 1.9JTD two-stage turbocharged diesel engine was successfully launched. The new engine's driving force is close to 100 hp/L (1 hp = 735W), combining powerful power and torque density.
With its excellent low-speed torque performance, the engine has become the most representative new member of the Fiat Powertrain diesel engine product line and has reached the requirements of future Euro V emission standards.
The 1.9JTD two-stage turbocharged diesel engine is based on the existing 1.9 JTD 16-valve engine. The power is divided into 180 hp/4000r·min-1 and 190 hp/4000r·min-1. 400Nm/2000r·min-1. The engine will be available to all customers, while its 190-horsepower engine is limited to the Fiat Group automotive applications.
The engine is outstanding in that its low-speed torque performance is increased by 50%, and the torque is up to 300Nm at 1250r/min. This is mainly due to the use of advanced supercharging technology, including the use of a two-stage turbocharged engine, and is designed to enhance the thermodynamic resistance, increasing the maximum cylinder pressure to 180Pa and the exhaust gas temperature to 800°C.
Usually when the size of the turbocharger is determined, people often need to make choices and compromises between power and low speed torque. The two-stage turbocharging (TST) technology completely frees us from this limitation. The two-stage turbocharging technology allows the small turbocharger to operate at low speeds for optimum low speed torque and low speed response. When the power output demand increases, the small turbine engine will no longer function and another large size turbocharger will start working.
In addition, two-stage turbocharging technology increases the exhaust gas recirculation rate, eliminating the risk of the driver being penalized for fuel and effectively reducing nitrogen oxide emissions.
The engine is now fully compliant with future Euro V emission standards, thanks to four important improvements: reduction of compression ratio from 17.5 to 16.5, and the use of low-pressure metal glow plugs; improved exhaust gas recirculation cooler (with bypass) With exhaust gas recirculation valve; Lambda sensor with diesel particulate filter; newly designed intake manifold.
As a member of the Fiat B family engine, the new engine will be produced at Fiat Powertrain Technology AG's Pratola Serra plant in the province of Avellino.
