Develops building materials that absorb radioactive cesium
Recently, Kinki University in Japan announced that a research team led by its part-time lecturer, Morimura Mori, has developed a building material containing mineral zeolite called “zeolite calcium mortarâ€. This type of mortar can maximize the absorption of radioactive cesium dissolved in water after solidification, and is expected to be used for the construction of a facility for storing radioactive contaminants or a filter for purifying sewage.
The tiny pores of zeolite are adsorptive and capable of absorbing radioactive cesium. In the United States Sanli Island nuclear power plant accident, this material was used to treat sewage. Zeolite-mixed mortar was previously used as a building material with a deodorizing function. In this development, the researchers increased the strength and water resistance of the mortar after coagulation by adding calcium ion water.
When effluent containing radioactive cesium passes through the solidified body of the new type of zeolitic calcium mortar, the cerium and the material containing yttrium can be absorbed and filtered. Because of its ability to easily infiltrate water, it has successfully absorbed more than 99% of the water in the water when it was used to absorb the aqueous solution of the yttrium-containing solution. Since the zeolite calcium mortar has numerous tiny pore structures after solidification, it is not easy to block even the sewage containing solid impurities.
In the future, the above-mentioned Japanese research team will continue to study various methods of using zeolite calcium mortar to improve its performance as a building material and its ability to adsorb radioactive cesium. (Reporter: Lan Jianzhong)
