4.5 tons of ammonia leakage accident at a food factory in Fujian

Sanming Fire Brigade has mobilized seven fire engines and 43 officers and men. After more than three hours of accident investigation, dilution of water jets, closing of valves, and anti-chemical decontamination, the company finally managed to eliminate dangerous situations.

“At the time, I was working as usual. I suddenly noticed a white smoke coming from the window of the factory building.” said Xiao Wang, a factory food production worker, because the white smoke has a strong pungent odor, unlike ordinary combustion products. The scent, the curious King Wang immediately went outside the workshop with his co-workers to see what happened, only to find that the source of pungent gas was located in the factory's ammonia tank.

Xiaowang immediately reported the situation to the supervisor on duty in the factory, and immediately the factory quickly called the police for help.

When the fire officers and soldiers arrived at the scene, they walked outside the gates of the factory, and a strong pungent odor was blown. The fire brigade immediately wore an air device to the site of the investigation. Near the tank where the ammonia tank was located, the vicinity was full of white smoke and the visibility was less than 1 meter.

At the scene, white smoke continued to leak along the seams and windows on both sides of the warehouse. The visibility on the spot was extremely low.

According to management personnel of the plant, ammonia gas tanks store 4.5 tons of ammonia gas. But even more frightening is that after ammonia leaks, it is extremely toxic and can burn human skin. If it is inhaled too much, it can cause lung swelling and death.

According to the understanding of the situation, the fire department started the rescue in two groups: a group of officers and men first evacuated the workers in the factory area, and a group of officers and soldiers discharged water to dilute the ammonia.

However, due to the complex internal conditions of the storage and the unclear sightings, the fire officers and soldiers had entered the storage room four times to investigate and found no results, and were forced to withdraw.

According to storeroom managers, there was only one ammonia tank in the warehouse. However, in order to supply food for refrigeration, the tank was divided into four lanes and consisted of a high-pressure drum and three low-pressure drums. Therefore, the ammonia valve was delivered. More often than not, you should check leaks one by one.

According to the situation on the spot, the fire officers and men under the cooperation of the factory staff replaced the air respirator into the reservoir to find the leak. After several internal investigations, the fire officers finally found the ammonia tank valve and discovered that the ammonia leak point was located near the pressure gauge. At this point, the pressure gauge has broken.

After finding the leak, the fire brigade immediately closed the valve and blocked it with a plugging tool. In the process of plugging, the officers and soldiers divert ammonia to dilute the water to protect them and ensure that the plugging work is carried out smoothly, while organizing personnel to enter the storage house to carry out operations.

Relieve pressure, open valve, jacket, exhaust valve... After 3 hours of intense rescue, at 22:28, the closure was successful. After determining that the safety hazard has been resolved, the fire brigade personnel cleared the site of the accident before deciding to leave the site.

At present, the cause of the accident is still under investigation.
